W3C Inclusion Fund and Invited Expert Fund for TPAC 2025 Last week we opened, at the same time as registrations for our TPAC 2025 meeting, the applications to two funds available as part of the?W3C Community Engagement Support Program:?The?TPAC Inclusion Fund and the W3C Invited Experts Support Fund. This is designed to support people from under-represented groups who wouldn’t be able to attend or meaningfully contribute to TPAC without financial support. TPAC 2025 will be on 10-14 November, in Kobe (Japan) and online. I had the honor to provide closing remarks at #GC25 among a distinguished list of speakers, to the first Global Digital Collaboration conference in #Geneva yesterday. It was a learning opportunity for me, and it was inspiring to see so many private sector companies, governments, civil society organizations, academia and standards development organizations, tackling together the difficult conversations about #ID and #wallets and the benefits that they can bring to humanity, as well as openly discussing the potential risks and harms, an impactful #multistakeholder dialogue. Over the two days of the conference, it was humbling to see W3C work recognized. Thank you! ?? the value of #interoperability, and its promise for #inclusion and #universality was core to the discussions These were the main points I’ve highlighted: ??Remind this community to reflect and consider how their work on policy frameworks and technical solutions is addressing #accessibility, #internationalization, #privacy and #security, as well as #sustainability. Not as an afterthought, but #bydesign. ??#Privacy is core to trustworthy infrastructure, as it gives people agency and control about what information to disclose in accessing specific services, tools and completing transactions. ??The lack of global standards can lead to isolation, fragmentation, and distrust. Concrete #incentives and #financialsupport to those working on the development and maintenance of open international technical standards is key for solutions to be able to handle this complexity. ??#Collaboration is hard and probably not a line in most organizations' budgets. However, the challenges in creating a global digital infrastructure can not be solved by a single entity. It requires us to ask questions, to make informed decisions, and to be flexible, to understand when we need trade-offs and compromises to be able to achieve our collective vision. ????We need to show up to the table, especially when it is not easy. The stakes are too high not to do so. Thanks to the team at OpenWallet Foundation and Beat Jans’s team at the Swiss Confederation for their efforts to make it all happen, specially @DanielGoldscheider, Rolf Rauschenbach and Ruth Puente. It was great to share with the team on-site Philippe Le Hégaret Simone Onofri Pierre-Antoine Champin Tara Whalen Dominique Hazael-Massieux and get the encouragement and support from Seth Dobbs, Coralie Mercier and Amy van der Hiel remotely. 2025-2028 Strategic Objectives and Initiatives The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has had a profound impact through its broad mandate and comprehensive methodology. Since its founding 30 years ago, W3C has played a pivotal role in developing trustworthy global solutions by establishing international standards that rigorously prioritize accessibility, internationalization, privacy, and security. This ethos has made the web the single, open, interoperable platform that connects humanity. To navigate challenges and opportunities effectively, W3C will focus on its impact. By building upon this impact, W3C aims to attract more people to shape and strengthen the web. Through continuous growth, W3C can further the virtuous circle. To increase its impact, W3C will prioritize four long-term strategic objectives: diversifying support, enhancing impact, broadening footprint, and solidifying structure. In support of these objectives, W3C will monitor five initiatives over the next two to three years: structural evolution, impact framework, stakeholder outreach strategy, technology strategy, and policy engagement. In summary, W3C should work towards diversifying our support, identifying new stakeholders who can contribute, strengthening existing membership work to rapidly adapt to and mitigate risks posed by the rapidly evolving environment, and enhancing our organization’s structure and operations. Privacy is core to creating a trustworthy digital infrastructure. Because of this, it has long been a horizontal at W3C, and we recently elevated our Privacy Principles to a Statement in recognition of essential need to address privacy threats. W3C standards may be used by anyone at no cost; if they were not free, developers would ignore them.

Today, the Verifiable Credentials 2.0 family of specifications is now a W3C Recommendation, making expression, exchange, and verification of digital credentials easier and more secure. Credentials are a part of our daily lives; driver's licenses are used to assert that we are capable of operating a motor vehicle, university degrees can be used to assert our level of education, government-issued passports enable us to travel between countries. The family of Verifiable Credentials W3C Recommendations provides a mechanism to express digital credentials in a way that is cryptographically secure, privacy respecting, and machine-verifiable, as well as provides an extension mechanism so that specific applications (identity credentials, university credentials, etc.) can use their own terminology.
