    Juniper Networks' Contrail is a simple, open and agile Cloud Network Automation platform that implements secure multitenancy and enables dynamic service chaining in private, public, and hybrid clouds.. Infrastructure analytics and visualization features provide insight into virtual and physical networks, simplifying operations and decision making with proactive planning and predictive diagnostic capabilities.

    As a software-based networking offering, the use of Contrail for overlays and data delivery to VMs requires to allocate some portion of the host compute node CPU resources for Contrail vRouter data plane functions, which can be costly from a power, compute and space perspective for network-intensive workloads such as VNFs (Firewall, virtual EPC...). To eliminate this CPU overhead, Netronome has provided the ability to accelerate Contrail vRouter and preserve valuable CPU cycles through offload of the Contrail vRouter data plane to Netronome's Agilio SmartNICs. This solution improves vRouter forwarding performance for VNFs and VMs above 20Mpps while consuming only 2 CPU cores.
    This enables drastic improvements to cloud workloads' performance and reduction of TCO to run these VNFs by up to 6X.

    This presentation will detail the Contrail ecosystem and architecture and provide an overview of the Contrail feature set and use cases. Subsequently, the presentation will introduce Netronome and their family of Agilio SmartNICs that bring the speed of software innovation to hardware. The presentation will also detail the performance levels achievable from both a throughput perspective (PPS) to speed data delivery to VNFs and from a CPU utilization perspective for a Joint Contrail / Netronome solution which significantly improves performance for Contrail-based networking for compute nodes in virtualized environments.
